This generalization seems wrong most of the time for the horns I've heard. The German instruments, with longer leadpipes, as a class have a larger bore than instruments of similar overall size made on the American plan. The Alexander, for example, has a bore you could roll a quarter through--something like .9 inches. But it has a more colorful sound (with more overtones) than an American instrument with a smaller bore (and they ALL had smaller bores). The sound is commanding, compared to a sweeter sound with more fundamental from, say, a Yorkbrunner (to name two I've heard played by the same good player).

I'm with Chuck, I wonder at the effect of bore at the valves. It seems to me that the location of the straight valve tubing in the bugle has a smaller effect than the arrangement of all the tapers.
