Why not carefully cut one "turn" off of each spring and then carefully bend the new spring ends up to nice flat "finished" ends - as now are the original spring ends?

BTW,I cannot think of a good outright substitution, at least not one easily ordered from some run-of-the-mill place like Allied Supply, etc. The "generic" sousa springs (the springs that one would put in to a Conn, etc.) are too big and long ("bottoming out" problems), and the only other spring that I know of that is about the same size (the Besson-fitting one) is also a bit stiff.
