The question becomes "how do we cultivate interest in concert band music so the genre doesn't die?"
Which really is a piece of the question, "How do we cultivate interest in ALL types of music so none of them become extinct?"
It seems like concert band music is only appreciated by people who play in concert bands, you're right. Is this from lack of exposure, or because the music really does suck?
Personally, I love concert band music, but I'm more of a fan of contemporary works rather than transcriptions (unless I liked the piece before it was transcribed anyways). But, I also acknowledge that people like me with a trained ear make up a DARNED small percentage of the population.
Do concert bands need to keep kowtowing to the public and playing crappy arrangements of popular tunes to stay in business, or is there a way to educate people to bring them up to a higher level???
