It would seem to me not that Miles Davis couldn't actually HEAR all of the fast notes, but instead that he couldn't "hear" them in his own head; i.e. fast technical things just didn't suit what he was trying to express.
If THAT'S your problem, find something else to play! :-)
I'm always a fan of playing what "feels" right, so long as you're also constantly working to expand your notion of what "feels" right.

And just for the record, I think that Theme and Variation pieces designed to show off nothing but the technique of the player are about the most musically STUPID things on the planet. Not that I'm against technique, BUT I'm against the people who think (whether consciously or not) that it is the be-all and end-all of musicality.
