Sure that is fine, you always have to "make music" whatever you do. And Roger Bobo is not the only "musical" teacher out there in Europe. The point is he doesn't teach excerpts, his focus is on solo playing, not puting people in jobs.
You need a great low register to play for these orchestras, on Bb or C tuba, and support the whole brass section and or orchestra.
And, not everyone comes from the field band either.
