From my perspective as a second-rate amateur, I would say that I generally stick with one mouthpiece per horn.

But each horn wants a different mouthpiece, and every few years I find that I'm ready to switched to something a little better but more demanding.

For example, until recently, I was happy with a Warburton with a medium backbore on my F, and a Miraphone Rose Orchestra on my BBb. But this year I found I wasn't happy with the sound, and I started experimenting. I'm now using a PT-48 on the BBb and a Conn Helleberg (full size) on the F. Now, those mouthpieces are not the same. The Conn has a sharper rim, and the PT-48 more a cup shape. The funnel of the Conn darkens the bright sound of the Yamaha, and the cup of the PT-48 gives a commanding projection and presence on the Miraphone.
