A couple years ago I got a job playing with one of the disney summer bands. At my audition, my prepared pieces went very well and I could tell that things were going nicely. When the guy auditioning me pulled out the sight-reading book, I remember exactly what he said: "here's where we seperate the men from the boys (women from the girls)."

Although I'm not the best sight-reader in the world, and i would love a job in an orchestra, where you can really get in trouble if you sight-read at a rehearsal, I have been face to face with sectors of the music world where sight reading is a true test of a person's worth. It's a life skill, and could be considered a decent measuring device for one's fluency of the musical language. geez, now I really want to go and practice my reading some more.
