It was a very quiet passage and the tuba part was basically intended to be a rumble (written by some local uni student) - which was fortunate, because as you say, it didn't sound exactly beautiful. My point was that the note (and the desired effect) was there, and definately wouldn't have been if I had tried to do the whole thing in one breath.
