Amtrak worked well for me in a transaction just completed. The tuba 4/4 siz was mumified w/ bubble wrap inside the case and the case was suspended with packing peanuts inside a large cardboard box. I was forced to send the tuba to a less than optimal Amtrak, because of restrictions on the size of the box that could be recieved at the best location. Check around!! The cost was based on size rather than weight. for this very tall 4/4 tuba and case, the cardboard box was 50"x30"x30", the cost was ~$63, insurance($4K) ~$25, Packing was ~$50. The alternative was to ship ground freight by truck....which was projected to cost >$200.
