Protecting Silver Plating

What can you use to protect the silver plating from an acidic touch? Is wiping it down occasionally, enough?

I am new to owning a silver-plated tuba, and am concerned about preserving the plating, both in appearance and intergity, at contact points (well, all over....). The problem is this--- I seem to have a pretty acidic body system.....I ate through the laquer on my old horn, in record time. On my next laquer horn, I used a sheet of clear contact (plastic), which worked pretty well.

My concern about using it on the silver plating is two-fold; First, will air leak underneath the clear contact and oxidize the silver, which leads to my second concern, will peeling off the contact hurt (pull off) the silver plating?

What do you use, if anything, to protect your silver instrument?

Any experience that you can share would be helpful ---- I'm sure that there are many of you out there who have been playing on silver for a while!

Thanks.
