You make a very good point. My feeling is that of the current list of solo pieces a tuba player should know, Vaughan-Williams is first and foremost, no matter what key tuba he plays. I guess that means my opinion is that there really isn't an essential 5 solos that are specifically for CC/BBb and that the most important solo for a tubist to know is originally written for bass tuba. And concerning my list, the Persichetti is really an afterthought even though I really like the piece. That means I really could only come up with three essential pieces that are specifically for the CC/BBb tuba. I'm sure I would get arguments about some of my other choices as well. I've seen the Kraft played many times on an F tuba, for example. I just hope that Gene's premiere goes well and that John Stevens has written a masterwork for us. God knows, we need one!
