This is a good and thorough answer. Yes, the majors will often exercise the option of inviting known players to the finals. Mr. Jacobs would have easily qualified for such an invitation, and in his own day, would have swept the field. In these days he would have been rivalled, and its anyone's guess. How many auditions have we heard of in all categories where no one is hired?

I was going on the premise that Arnold Jacobs - in his prime - shows up at a cattle call unknown to anyone. With this in mind it could be Tulsa as well as San Francisco. With no advantages except his abilities, he has to work his way up the food chain. Chances are he'll do great. We've heard stories about the "dark horse" that gets the gig. It's no reflection on his abilities that he risks being passed up. It's a commentary on the cattle call system. It's a miracle anyone gets hired. The winner is often the most accurate and the most musically neutral. Jacobs was highly accurate, but rarely neutral.

It's a tribute to many of these winners that most of them blossom on the job.
