There was an interesting ariticle several years ago in a Sunday San Francisco Chronicle (I think). Anyway, they interviewed Arthur Krebiel (sp?) - retired principal horn of the S.F. Symphony. Mr. Krebiel (I'm probably butchering the spelling of his name) stated that he had gone back to listen the justly famous Fritz Reiner/Chicago Symphony recording of Ein Heldenleben. When doing so, he soon realized that the standards in horn playing are so much greater now than they had been back in those days. I don't know if he was right or not, but who I'm I to argue with someone who has had such a great career playing the horn himself? It reminds me of the ongoing debates about "what if such and such former all-star slugger were playing in today's Major League Baseball", etc.
