I'm one of those goons who can count several hundred performances even before finishing school (no, not all are school related -- I'm just older!), and I will say that having the extra performance experience, plus the accompanying rehearsal time, means so much to adding to musicianship.

If you were staying in one hall and playing only unaccompanied solos as a career, you don't need to musically work with anyone else. The rest of us, we're dealing with SOMEbody, along with countless other situations & problems. The practice room can help you deal with your instrument, but it won't amount to squat unless you have thorough experience in groups.

Here's a line: Performances are the best way to learn how to deal with yourself.

OK, so I'm feeling curmudgeonly today.... :-)
