While I disagree that the sound of a solo sop is bland, I will definitely agree that the sound of a hornline can be one of the most exciting things to listen to. I don't know what to think of the new ruling--I'll just wait and see--but if it helps them move ahead, I'm all for it. One of the hallmarks of drum corps is its ability to evolve and change, instead of staying the same.
No, drum corps isn't the CSO, but it isn't supposed to be. Someone (I think it was Leland) said that drum corps is the thrash punk division of the classical world, even if they are playing Wagner. I think that a drum corps experience is a good one to add to one's musical experiences, because it is so unique. One of the most fun things to do is to take something you've played in orchestra, and kick it in the butt on the field.
