Two of my fellow players each have 186's -- one is an S and the other is the "Pro" with the adjustable valve springs. Between the two, the S version is noticeably brighter and has less dynamic range, but neither is better in tune than the other (both are average). All that nickel may be a big part in the darker sound of the pro model.
Note that this comparison is between a limited number of specimens. However, all our school's new S-186's, including the one bought by my friend, are brighter (dare I say more nasal) than the aforementioned pro model.
