There's nothing wrong with the flute. Seems to me that in the Song and Wind book, the flute is called out as being similar to the tuba in that it requires a high flow rate air supply.
Flutes, like tubas, tend to be expensive. But more in the sense of fine jewelry rather than heavy plumbing.
So relax and enjoy the music. At least your nephew didn't show a prefernce for the violin. He's young and not past redemption; there's a chance that he may yet get religion.
