A few years back, the Cleveland Orchestra did a concert performance of Berg's Wozzeck, and Ronald Bishop used a hundred year old Eb helicon for the stage band part (if you don't know this opera, there is a very significant scene in an old divey bar with a drunken band on stage, playing very difficult and drunk sounding music). He told me that Dohnanyi liked the tiny sound of the horn, and it added visually, as well.
