My thoughts on selecting a college :
1) find out "who teaches where"
1a) decide whom you want to study with,
2) talk to your present teacher about "who's out there"
3) correspond with the teachers at the schools you are thinking about
4) apply to several schools, and for all the scholarships you can find out about
5) dont forget to keep practicing A LOT
...I got called one afternoon by the trombone prof at our local university...
he wanted me to come in and play an audition for scholarship THAT afternoon!
and stupid me....I said "I have nothing prepared"
gee that was a long time ago...
