Don't overlook the Besson/Boosey 982. These should be within your price range if you can find a used one. I could be misled, but I think that John Fletcher assisted in the design of the 982 (smaller leadpipe is the only difference from the 981) and he played one quite a bit. I think even Sean has or had one. These are professional quality horns that I think will suit your needs. As with any purchase, just play as many horns as you can until you find the "right one". I have a 982 that is the "right one" for me, and feel very fortunate to have it after playing many horns that do not even come close in comparison to my 982.
