It`s quite disconcerting to think that the major composers that did write for the tuba seem to have saved, if not their worst work, at least their substandard work for their attempts at solo pieces. I`m not saying that what we have is all horrible, don`t get me wrong, but why couldn`t we have gotten at least one of these composers` great pieces?

Vaughan-Williams...it was the first one. It sure isn`t comparable to the Lark Ascending or anything else he did for solo instruments. The 2nd mvt. is a nice tune, but that`s about it. Like it or not, it`s our standard piece. At least it`s better than the harmonica concerto!

Hindemith...his sonate was a math experiment at best.

Gregson...does nothing for me at all.

John Williams...I actually quite like his piece. But if even he was saying it was his worst piece...well.......

I wonder if it`s true that Tchaikovsky really was planning on writing the first tuba concerto...that would have been much cooler.
