I read about the use of the ball in a previous posting on TubeNet (or if I am mistaken, in an ad for an EEb tuba some time ago through Low Brass Werks?). I could find the reference if you are really interested; I probably have it printed in my files and could tell you who said it. The person had many modifications to his EEb and sounded like he knew a lot.
If you look at some tuba websites, such as Norman's, they listed as separate items a carriage strap and a belt. This would suggest that the belt helps support the tuba.
Let me know if you find out that the ball never had that use. The belt is a good idea if it takes the weight off the upper torso and lets it depend on the waist and legs. I may buy a Meinl Weston Harness, but will it fit as well on my Imperial EEb? Will the mouthpiece be where I want it?
Best regards,
Bill
