In order for the Getzen to play as a BBb horn, the 5th valve must be open all of the time. That would be a source of stuffiness. Fifth valves that are attached on the leadpipe are typically stuffier than those that are attached AFTER the valve cluster, which are typically attached on the main tuning slide. The Meinl Weston piston CC tubas, the Conn 52/56J, the Hirsbrunners all have 5th valves that are attached AFTER the valve cluster. Perhaps if the fifth valve on the Getzen were located on the main tuning slide and the leadpipe was a direct shot to the valve cluster, the Getzen would be more consistent from BBb to CC side. This is just a guess. When I was studying with Ed Diefes he had a Getzen that he removed the 5th valve from. He made the leadpipe a straight shot to the valve cluster. He made these modifications himself. He sounded GREAT on it! :)
