Perhaps because F is easier to play than CC, especially on solo material. Try playing the Vaughan Williams on CC. It's very possible, but it's much easier on F. Personally, I tend to lean toward the darker style of playing my F (more like the CC) but there are times when you should definitely brighten things up; ie. the opening to Gregson's Alarum or anything written by Berlioz. When you're using your F on something more melodic, I think you should strive for a darker sound.
