I will aver that when the CSO didn't record with Solti during that time, the results could be transcendent. The Mahler 9 with Giulini is among one of my top 10 favorite recordings of orchestral music. The Barenboim recordings show more restraint and attention to ensemble than any of the Solti recordings. So, there is my argument for bad leadership, flame on.
