One of the summer community bands (a trust fund band, really) I play in has such a conductor. We have limited rehearsal time: a couple hours before the concert. When we arrive, everything is laid out, music in order in our folders, on stands, etc. The conductors knows the scores thoroughly, knows the group's capabilities, and we rehearse the things we need to. Things he knows we can play well at sight (or because they're standards we all know), we rehearse briefly, if at all. Less familiar pieces, or arrangements with difficulties for particular sections, we go over carefully. The conductor knows exactly what he wants from us, and cheerfully brings it out. Time is rarely wasted in rehearsal, if it is it's usually a problem with a missing part or a mistake/conflict between the score and the parts.

The only other time I played under a conductor who was that efficient was in college: at VMI, our conductor was LTC Bierly(?) who had just retired as conductor of the US Army Field Band. He gave great rehearsal.
