I sometimes have soreness in my wrists and in my jaw when I am practicing significantly more than usual. Of course, when I pay attenention to my technique and ergonomic issues, these problems are greatly reduced.
As for asthma, I have found that tuba playing and cycling have reduced my need for medications. The key, it seems, is to be efficient and effective with the air. I have not used it myself (yet), but I have heard great things about Sam Palafian's "Breathing Gym"
Pay attention to ergonomics and proper breathing and you should be playing tuba for many years.
