I knew I forgot one. I did Mahler 1 two years ago and I did do what you mentioned. On the initial low F, I pulled all the slides out so the note was in tune with 12345. It worked wonders as the resistance made it easy to play soft and negated the need for too many breaths. I did play the solo in the 3rd Mvnt. on F and the rest of the piece on a big horn. I daresay that this work could be done on an F of a proper magnitude.
