Whether it's superior or not (I hightly doubt that), the Abbado/BPO recording that you mention is currently not in print in the U.S., and it doesn't even show on DG's own website at this point. I don't recall an Abbado remake of "Sinfonietta" ever making it over to the states (he had recorded it previously with the LSO for Decca). I know that he had recorded an orchestral version of "Diary Of One Who Disappeared", which was rather lame. For sheer sonic joy, the two disc Janacek set on Reference Recordings is wonderful (Jose Serebrier conducing some Czech orchestra), but is difficult to find. That and the MacKerras would still be my recommendations.
