Angle of leadpipe and tone quality?

I play a 1976 Imperial EEb with a high, angled leadpipe and the ideal position for an open sound and good vibrations it to have the tuba bell down somewhat and angled to the right with the bottom out and away from by body. In this way the air flows most freely out. It was, afterall, a marching tuba.
On the new style 981 leadpipe's, is the ideal playing angle different?
In general, does the leadpipe shape and angle affect the tone quality significantly? It seems to me that it does. Any comments would be appreciated, either about these tubas or about other models that have different and very good leadpipes such as the Willsons or Hirsbrunners. Bill
