I played in Albany Symphony under Julius Hegyi, who had a "delayed" beat. Freaked me out too, and I was really, really happy that I didn't play a brass instrument that just HAD to be right on the beat. In the violin section, it was a lot safer to come in a trifle late, which is what I often did.
