I'm finding a lot to respond to on this topic. With two different experienced amateur players that I have given private lessons to, when they played "with" a metronome, what they were doing was listening for the click and then playing right after it. They had no idea they were wrong in that. I still remember after weeks of trying to get one of them to play with the beat, that he finally said, "Oh, you mean I'm not supposed to be able to hear the click? Like, I'm supposed to cover up the click with my sound?" I think this is an amazingly common misconception.
