Actually, the bass trombone vs. tenor is (IMHO) an important distinction; bass trombone should sound darker than the tenor, and a more open embouchure is certainly appropriate.
And yes, the 'eehhhh' IS relative. I suggested saying both 'eehhhh' and 'oohhh' so that the guy could feel how the tongue rises in the 'eehhh'. It's the nature rather than the degree of change I was recommending.
