In my mind, I believe that it is. My cup is also a little more v shaped than a true cup. What really helped me was that Mr. Elliott listened to my setup, took note of what I was currently doing, and directed me in a good direction as far as my mouthpiece needs.

As far as stock mouthpieces for tenor work, I liked the Conn Remmingtons, and others made on the same principle.

As far as it being something for a beginner, I wonder if someone picking up the horn for fun would want to spend the money for the mouthpiece. I think they are well worth the money for pros and serious players (before anyone flames; ametures can be very good serious players even if they are only in it for fun).
