I can't help but I know what you mean. I play bluegrass and Irish fiddle, and it took years and years of slaving away at it before I stopped sounding like a classical violinist trying to do something awkward. It is a genre just like classical, and takes an immersion period to get it. Some people can't switch from the style they originally learned ( be it classical, jazz, or whatever ) and take on the characteristics of a new style. I've tried to play classical brass with a couple of jazz players, and they couldn't get it. It works both directions.
