F Tuba Size

Anybody know why many F tubas are so big (physically)?

Many F tubas, especially German style F's, measure 38-40 inches tall, the same size as many CC tubas. The Yamaha YFB-621 is shorter than that, and even a Cerveny "Piggy" CC horn is only 35", so why don't they make F tubas smaller (and easier to carry)?

Do you think that the sound of the German horns is dependant on this feature?

Any thoughts?
