It may sound wierd, but I dont think its the PRESENCE of the valve as much as the length of the tubing in the valve. My Getzen came with 3 slides for the 5th valve. The flat half step, the sort of flat whole step (the "conversion to BBb" slide) and the true flat whole step. The shorter the tubing I had on the valve, the better the horn responded, even when the valve was not in use. The flat whole step valve made the horn play with a funny tone and with sluggish response. The other two set ups both play the same as each other-very good response, excellent sound.
