The extension to that logic would seem to be that any city which can not support a full time orchestra of "world class" standard should forget the whole idea. Going further maybe we should just have a great World Series or World Cup of orchestras and cut it down to one world champion, get rid of the rest and not bother supporting music in the education system either. Afterall, if somebody really wants to do something (which many consider a frivolous waste) that according to some "produces nothing" do it in your own time, at your own expense and if you are dedicated (silly??) enough to put in enough time to become the world's greatest tuba player you can wait until the incumbent in the world championship orchestra leaves the post and take over.

Now, wouldn't it be nice if MORE cities could support so many orchestras - maybe a few more of this boards readers/contributors would have a chance of getting a job.
