You should make a chart with the different parts of a mouthpiece and how they affect the sound, intonation, feel, articulation, etc. Then decide what you want from each aspect. For instance, if you want more flexibility, a narrower rim is better. If you want a more focused sound, a smaller cup diameter. Compare all of this to the instrument(s) you will be using the mouthpiece with. Come up with specifications for each part that you want for the optimal mouthpiece. See if you can find a mouthpiece that matches these. If you can, buy it. If you can't, call Doug Elliott or someone else who does custom mouthpieces. Research will save money.
