Clear plastic tubing can be had at a hardware store, Lowe's, Home Depot, etc., for about $0.35 per foot. Get about 5 feet of tubing with 3/16" ID, 5/15" OD, slit lengthwise with a razor blade, fit on bell rim, trim ends to where they meet neatly, then put about 3 or 4 drops of Super Glue or equivalent on the joint, and you have a sturdy bell rim protector that does not take away from the appearance of the instrument at all.
