small college gigs

I was just wondering what the realistic odds of a tuba / euphonium player getting a small college "Low Brass" gig are? I have noticed a lot of smaller schools favor trombonists. What if I am a tuba / euph player with some trombone experience, yet it is not my "major" instrument? (Let's say I can play some, but am not a monster, and I am familiar with the literature and pedagogy of the instrument.) I was just wondering if anyone could share any thoughts / experience on this. Is it worth putting a lot of time into getting more trombone experience if it isn't my forte? I don't want my tuba playing to suffer. Should I focus on trying to tie my teaching in with a different secondary area, i.e. theory? A small school job is my ultimate goal, so I am wondering if my career plans need revision at this point!
thanks for any thoughts / input.
