I'm not so sure that it's strictly the "competition thang" that's a potential problem. I've played with a group at the NABBA championships three times now, and though I'm not a regular with the group (they're about a hundred mile drive each way), they are a great bunch of people who enjoy making music. On the other hand, I've also briefly played with a brass band that's much more local, who doesn't currently compete at NABBA, and yet was significantly less enjoyable, in part because of their "seriousness".

The particular dynamics of a band, how it is run and how its members perceive themselves and the organization; these factors can make or break a band, and in my opinion are largely separate from whether or not a band competes.

And as great as brass bands might be for tuba, you ain't seen nothin' 'til you've played the euphonium chair. Euph heaven!
