When stripping epoxy lacquer using lye (or Easy-off), I've noticed that it does a pretty good job on old hardened slide grease as well as calcium deposits. EO should have the effect of saponifying (turning to soap) the old oily residue. Might be an answer for one of those "french-fried" horns.
