I tried using regular ear plugs while conducting, playing, etc. and never really could get used to them. The same thing was true for me when trying out ear muffs. I do use a combination of ear muffs and ear plugs while mowing the yard, shooting firearms, and other outdoor activities where loud noises are involved. For musical situations, however, I have found the best ear protection has been musician plugs. These custom-made plugs were constructed utilizing a mold from my ear canals (done by an audiologist). The resulting plugs essentially turn the volume down without distorting the sounds, frequencies, balance, and intonation as I have noticed occurs with regular plugs/muffs. They are by far the best couple hundred bucks I have spent in a long while. Best of luck in finding a remedy for your situation!
