As I understand, it's not unusual for microphones to be placed way down the bell in a number of situations. Raymond Stewart of Meridian Arts Ensemble used a mic attached to a metal hanger that laid inside the bell (he could play comfortably all night and still balance the trap set), and I've been told that Kirk Joseph of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band records with the mic wrapped in a towel and placed in the throat of his sousaphone.

Whatever works, use it. I wished that I could've had the mic farther away from my trombone bell in a lot of clubs & bars, but to be of any use to me, the gain would have been high enough to pick up lots of extra noise, and maybe some feedback, too. That's the drawback of small spaces.

Oh, and NEVER leave your horn standing where there are drunk people trying to dance... :-)
