The statement wasn't intended to be to Wagner's disadvantage. Wagner, with all his "baggage" is beyond blame, advantage, or disadvantage. It is simply a fact. Wagner loaded his works with sounds and images which made for ideal expropriation by a hyper-nationalist movement like the Nazis. For you to ask if this wasn't "his fault" doesn't rise to the level of cynicism. It is merely simplistic, naive, and intellectually evasive.
