I've known quite a few people who made a passable (but not good) living by establishing a private teaching studio, along with performing. Some of them were classical guitar players, which has probably less playing opportunity than a tubist, so it's a feasible option. But none of them were trying to keep up with the Joneses.
I did that too....and although I didn't have enough money, it was the few years in my life when I had the most freedom. Now I'm a slave to the mortgage payment, but live in a really nice house.
