Actually, Alto horns use a mouthpiece between that on a flugel-horn and a small trombone mouthpiece, pretty much what a mellophone is suppose to use, but many french horn players are just to lazy to play on a learn a larger mouthpiece, and use an adapter to use their french horn mouthpieces, which kills the sound and intonation of the alto horn and mellophones alike.
