I think the best thing I ever heard Torchinsky do was his recording with the Philadelphia Orchestra (under Ormandy) of Prokofiev 5th. Despite his having what I consider to be a "smaller" sound (that is, that it doesn't sound particularly large by itself), on the recording it sounds massive. He taught me during lessons about the concept of a sound not being particularly pleasant to listen to up close but being just right for the orchestra. I only wish the recording techniques they used then were better because I think a great deal of what the orchestra did was lost in the translation. I shudder to think what those sessions must have sounded like live.
