Just so happens that I have both a Mirafone (note spelling) catalog and pricelist from 1981 when they were in Sun Valley CA.

A BBb 186-4U (or a 184 or 185 for that matter) listed at $4410. A CC 186-5U was $5190 and a 188-5U wa $5660, although the catalog makes no mention of the 188. Interestingly, a 190-5U CC is also mentioned for $6230 (I've never seen one in CC). Prices are without case (additional $350). A mouthpiece would set you back $45.00.

A model 65 Wagner tuba in F would set you back $2720.

Given that the US economy was reeling from massive inflation at the time (remember 18% mortgages), I think that Miraphones have remained an outstanding deal.

Go to your local library and check newspapers from that time to see what gallon of milk or a car or a plane ticket cost and marvel at how little the price of a tuba has gone up.
